Seminole Generating Station Selected as a 'Top Plant' for 2009 by POWER Magazine

Seminole station is recognized for its environmental leadership and continuous improvements
The Seminole Generating Station (SGS), which is owned and operated by Tampa-based Seminole Electric Cooperative, has been named one of six Top Coal Plants for 2009 by POWER, an energy industry magazine.

Seminole is the wholesale power supplier for 10 electric distribution cooperatives. Its Member systems together serve an estimated 1.7 million individuals and businesses across 46 Florida counties.

In its October 2009 issue, POWER recognizes the coal-fueled Seminole Station, located in Putnam County, Florida, for its success in showing that, �a good corporate environmental policy backed by corporate leadership and investment will produce a plant with a superior environmental performance track record.�

Further, in its article on the Seminole Station, POWER�s editor writes, �Complying with a corporate environmental policy requires much more than just writing a check for equipment upgrades. It takes a dedicated and knowledgeable staff that's willing to invest years of work to permanently reduce a plant's environmental footprint,� and notes that, �The staff of Seminole Generating Station have completed multiple, incremental plant improvements over the past decade that have significantly reduced air emissions and minimized solid waste disposal.�

Seminole recently completed a $300 million investment in new environmental controls and upgrades to existing environmental equipment at the Seminole Station.

While most utilities have an environmental policy that requires them to be proactive in their environmental stewardship, POWER says that Seminole, �walks the talk" of its corporate environmental policy.

�It does so by making solid investments in SGS plant operations over many years that go beyond merely meeting minimum regulatory requirements," POWER explains.

According to POWER's web site, Top Plants are those that, "have distinguished themselves as industry leaders for their best-of-class operating records, environmental performance, unique technology, or importance to their local community.�

�I could not be prouder of the staff at the Seminole Generating Station as well as the various support teams located throughout the company who have made this facility one of the best in the country,� said Tim Woodbury, Seminole�s CEO. �I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge the essential role played by Hitachi, Burns and McDonnell, W.W. Gay, URS Corporation, and Miller Electric in completing recent environmental upgrades at the plant.�
