Seminole Electric Cooperative, inc Our Environmental Commitment

Seminole is proud to be a recipient of a Leadership Award from the Council for Sustainable Florida. The Cooperative has a long-standing and continuing commitment to a diverse program of environmental stewardship at its generating stations. This program includes,

  • Recycling initiatives. The most significant recycling initiative is at the Seminole Generating Station. A half million tons of pollution control system waste is annually recycled into synthetic gypsum and sold for use in wallboard manufacturing. Fly ash and bottom ash also are recycled for use in the production of concrete and cement.
  • Continuous pollution control improvements. Seminole has continuously upgraded its power plants with new pollution control technologies as they become commercially available. A $300 million control improvement project was completed in 2009, including new selective catalytic reduction systems (SCRs), and enhancements to our existing Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems at the Seminole Generating Station.
  • Other pollution reduction efforts. Seminole promotes pollution reduction using more benign chemicals where possible. For example, Seminole opted to use urea (dry) ammonia for operation of its SCRs in lieu of the more commonly used, less expensive, but more hazardous form of ammonia, anhydrous ammonia.
  • Environmental training. Seminole provides comprehensive and on-going training for its plant employees and contractors to help encourage environmental awareness in addition to strict adherence to all state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Close coordination with regulators. Seminole’s environmental staff works closely with state and federal regulators on an on-going basis.
  • Commitment to renewable energy. Seminole meets 4% of its members’ energy needs with a portfolio of renewable energy – one of the largest percentage portfolios in Florida. We are committed to growing our renewables portfolio in a cost effective way that will help hold the line on member energy costs.
  • Conservation initiatives. Seminole is working with its Member Systems on new initiatives and programs to help member-consumers reduce their energy use (and as a result, their power bills). Conservation and energy efficiency improvements can help slow the growth in energy demand that drives the need to build new power plants. Such efforts, however, are not expected to preclude the need for Seminole to add new generating capacity in future years to reliably meet our Member’s future energy needs. This is because Seminole’s members serve some of Florida’s fastest growing areas, and energy demand is driven by both population changes and per capita energy use.
